Every number this site produces comes from the formulas below — nothing hidden, nothing server-side. If a result ever looks wrong, you can recompute it by hand and check us.
The system: Pythagorean (Western) numerology
This calculator uses the Pythagorean system — the standard method of modern Western numerology, attributed to the Greek tradition of Pythagoras. Letters map to the digits 1–9 in a repeating cycle. It is one of several traditions (Chaldean numerology uses a different 1–8 mapping, which is why a Chaldean tool and this site can legitimately give different numbers for the same name — more on that below).

The reduction rule (and master numbers)
Every calculation ends the same way: add the digits of the total together, and repeat until a single digit remains — unless the total is 11, 22, or 33. Those are master numbers and are never reduced. 11 keeps its charge as the Illuminator; 22 as the Master Builder; 33 as the Master Teacher.
Example: 30 → 3 + 0 = 3
Example: 29 → 2 + 9 = 11 → master number, stop (not 2)
Every formula we use
Life Path
Add every digit of the full date of birth (year, month and day), then reduce. Example: 15 May 1990 → 1+9+9+0+0+5+1+5 = 30 → 3+0 = 3.
Expression (Destiny)
Convert every letter of the full name with the Pythagorean table, sum, and reduce. Spaces are ignored.
Soul Urge (Heart's Desire)
The same, but only vowels count, with vowel values A=1, E=5, I=9, O=6, U=3:

Birth Date number
Derived from the month of birth, reduced. This is a convention preserved from the original version of this calculator.
Growth number
The Expression formula applied to the first name only.
Challenge number
From the birth date: a = |reduce(year) − reduce(month)|, b = |reduce(month) − reduce(day)|, then reduce(|a − b|).
Maturity number
reduce(Life Path + Expression).
Temperament
A count of the name's letters in four groups — Emotional (B I O R S T X Z), Physical (D E M W), Intuition (C F K Q U V Y), Mental (A G H J L N P).
Effectiveness score
The sum of the pairwise absolute differences between Life Path, Expression and Soul Urge. Lower = more internal harmony.
Name / Place / Domain value
Letters via the Pythagorean table plus digits as themselves; all other characters ignored; the total is reduced. The same formula serves business names, addresses and domains.
Why different sites sometimes give different numbers
If you have compared numerology calculators and gotten conflicting answers, you are not alone — it is the most common frustration in this space. There are three honest reasons:
- Different systems. Chaldean numerology maps letters to 1–8 (no 9) and reads names differently. Neither system is "wrong" — but mixing them is. This site is Pythagorean throughout, and says so.
- Reduction timing. Some tools reduce the month, day and year separately before adding; others (like this one) sum all digits at once. Both are practiced traditions; they can diverge when a master number appears at one stage but not the other.
- Master-number handling. Some tools reduce 11, 22, and 33 anyway. We never do.
That is why every result on this site shows its full arithmetic — you should never have to take a number on faith.
